- Client: Saffron Walden County High School, Essex
- Project: New pavilion
Saffron Walden County High School is a large and successful comprehensive school with extensive grounds including numerous sports pitches and a school farm set in a rolling agricultural landscape.
Our original brief was simply for a building to accommodate additional changing facilities and a club area by an overspill car park. Given the proximity of the school’s cricket pitch we felt that a traditionally styled pavilion with a veranda positioned and oriented to overlook the wicket would be most appropriate. Having seen our sketch design which also incorporated a clock turret and weathervane (with gold leaf finish!) the school agreed.
The developed scheme was awarded planning permission and built in nine months at a cost of £436,000. The new pavilion was opened by the Captain of the England cricket team, Alistair Cooke.
