- Client: Hatherley Care Home, Essex
- Project: Additional residential accommodation
At the time of our first involvement with Hatherley Care Home in Saffron Walden it occupied a substantial Victorian house which had been extended to more than double its original size to provide accommodation and all necessary support facilities for 22 residents. This project was to provide an additional ten en-suite bedrooms, lounge/dining areas and all necessary ancillary accommodation to be suitable for people with dementia.
As the site was restricted and at a considerable gradient it was necessary to introduce small landscaped courtyards and a retaining wall. The courtyards allowed daylight and natural ventilation to existing bedrooms as well as providing features of interest within the new extension. It was decided that the retaining wall should be in serpentine form to enhance the appearance of the external planting beds.
Given that the client did not want existing residents to be moved and that the building contractor’s access and site area were severely restricted the logistics of the construction programme demanded much attention to detail.
All aspects of the project (both design and implementation) satisfied the stringent requirements of the Care Quality Commission.
The building work was completed in seven months at a cost of £665,000.
