Development of a new Primary School

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

We had been involved with Christ Church CE Primary School in Brixton on various schemes when a project for complete rebuilding was awarded funding by Central Government.

We developed the design incorporating numerous environmental features including ground source heating, solar panels, natural stack ventilation and an intensive green roof. These features allowed the school to achieve the BREEAM environmental rating ‘very good’. The ‘intensive’ green roof formed an external garden area at roof level relieving pressure on the restricted amount of play space. All major trees were retained.

The elevations featured architectural masonry, facing brickwork, cast stone and a 2 storey curtain walling bay window.

The project was phased over 2 years to allow pupils to be housed in temporary teaching accommodation on the site. The overall cost was £4.1 million. The new school was opened in a celebratory service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
